#OTD August 4, 1944, 15-year-old diarist Anne Frank was arrested with her sister, parents and four others by the Gestapo after hiding for two years inside a building in Amsterdam. The identity of the Gestapo informer has never been conclusively established.

Twin brothers Fred and Rolf Flatau arrived at the Fort Ontario Emergency Refugee Shelter in Oswego, New York, #OTD August 5th 1944. They were two of 982 refugees from 18 different countries brought to the United States by the War Refugee Board.

Polish Jewish woman Ala Gertner was born in Będzin in 1912. She was incarcerated in Auschwitz in August 1943. She worked in 'Union' munition factory from where together with other women she smuggle gunpowder to Sonderkommando resistance. She was hanged on 6 January 1945

#OTD 7 August 1942 Esther Frenkel (Horonczyk) threw a letter from the deportation train ow.ly/KBkV50vnXiz "I am on the train. I do not know what has become of my Richard... Save my child, my innocent baby!" They were separated at Pithiviers & murdered in #Auschwitz.

Elisabeth Abegg was a German schoolteacher and resistance fighter against Nazism, who during the Holocaust rescued at least 80 Jews from certain death She was named Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem in 1967 & died #OTD August, 8, 1974 in Berlin.

#OTD 9 August 1942 200 Jews escaped Mir; they fled to the forests days before the planned liquidation of the Ghetto Warned by Oswald Rufeisen, a Jew with forged papers who was working for the Belarus police. Read his life story by Nechama Tec, a key influence on I AM JUDEN.

#OTD August 9, 1944, officials destroyed the Łódź Ghetto and deported more than 60,000 Jews and an unknown number of Roma to Auschwitz-Birkenau.

#OTD August 10, 1889, Zofia Kossak-Szczucka was born. She was a Polish writer and a World War II resistance member. She co-founded two Polish wartime organizations: The Front for the Rebirth of Poland and Żegota, to assist Polish Jews in surviving the Holocaust.

On 27 March, 1943, gay Dutch resistance fighter Willem Arondeus led the bombing of the Amsterdam civil service office to destroy the Nazi occupiers' records of Dutch Jews. His last words before his execution that July were "Tell the people that homosexuals are not cowards."
