An application to build a luxury golf course on one of the last coastal dune habitats in Scotland has been dealt a huge blow with NatureScot objecting to the plans. More here: bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotla…

Well said Shaun Spiers . And I would add that the Green Belt is not primarily an environmental designation, but a tool of strategic planning. We badly need more spatial planning at a strategic level.

💡| New report: To reach net-zero, England needs to produce 4.5GW from onshore wind by 2030. But at the current rate of progress, we won't reach this level for 4,700 years. The planning system needs to reform to build a net zero world. Read more here: bit.ly/IPPRrenew

Net zero progress is too slow, today's Climate Change Committee Progress Report says 🚨 One key ask is a review of road projects against Govt’s env targets 🔖 We agree – without a strategic spatial plan with net zero & nature at its heart, planning will not deliver the change we need 🏞️

Today, DEFRA appointed 48 bodies to lead Local Nature Recovery Strategies. There's already huge effort & money pouring into the strategies, but the legal link with planning remains a flimsy "have regard duty", so it could be for naught. A fix is possible in #LevellingUp bill.

"Rishi Sunak also mentioned new roads. Assurances are rapidly needed that they won't harm vital nature areas and align with commitments to protect 30% of land for nature by 2030 and reach Net Zero, as part of a sustainable transport strategy" 🚲👇wildlifetrusts.org/roads (4/4)
