Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera are known as prominent figures in the Stonewall uprising of 1969 and other LGBTQ+ activism efforts. Their trailblazing contributions served as a catalyst for the gay rights movement and opened the door for today’s Pride Month celebrations.

In 1978, artist, designer, and activist Gilbert Baker created the rainbow pride flag. This symbol is still prominent in the LGBTQ+ community today.
