With supermajorities in both legislative chambers and the backing of a new governor, some conservatives in the Louisiana Legislature are taking aim at colleges and universities with legislation that could eliminate their DEI programs #lalege #lagov lailluminator.com/2024/04/03/gop…

Louisiana's new maternal mortality data is out and it is more of the same bad news. Three striking findings: 1. Deaths overall among pregnant people are *UP*. Ratio jumped from 101.5 per 100,000 births in 2017-2019 to 143.3 per 100,000 births in 2020.

I gave up on numbering these tweets there's too much in this report. Another finding: 1 in 3 deaths had incomplete records. And autopsies were performed only in 2/3 of cases. This impacts how much researchers can actually learn from these deaths, to try to prevent others.

Flournoy saying that Louisiana already has a shortage of OBGYNs especially in rural areas. She’s noting a finding of the report and my own reporting that doctors are refusing to see pregnant women before 12 weeks of pregnancy to avoid treating miscarriages.

Another reason that young people are leaving Louisiana! We are 50th in maternal healthcare. It’s NOT all about the tax structure.

The stated logic of campus presidents - that the protests were disruptive is endlessly mendacious. Nothing I have experienced has been more disruptive than the brutalization, arrest and leveling of charges against peaceful protesters - many of whom are 17-20 years old.

Chilling piece in In These TImes, including a leaked document showing that Columbia worked with FBI and brought in private detectives to spy on students before Shafik faced Congress. Dartmouth also brought in undercover police to "gather intelligence" on student activists

The study found that the most significant driver of the increase in infant deaths was babies who died of congenital anomalies. In other words, women were forced by Texas law to have babies everyone knew would suffer and die.

A pregnancy center can bill the state $14 for distributing diapers that cost the center just over $.25. And before parents can get those diapers, they must take a class that the center can bill the state $30 for each hour of class a client attends. propublica.org/article/texas-…

DGF's work has fearlessly and rigidly investigated outcomes with respect to abortion, debunking some of the most persistent myths about the so-called harm of abortion. We all lose when science is defunded
