It took 20 years to restore rail service between Mobile and New Orleans after Katrina. I’m happy to see any rail restoration, but let’s be clear: no highway would have ever taken this long to be restored.

The Embankment cycleway (CS3) in London was purposefully built to be wider than was usual in order to future proof it. Some said it would hardly be used. Now there’s a decent case for widening it further.

Perhaps surprisingly, am fine with "loose" rent stabilization, so long as it includes: 1. Annual rent increases in the range of CPI + 1-2% 2. The ability to buy out a tenancy at a fair, formulaically determined price, so that the building can be (re-)renovated every ~30 yrs 3.

If the delivery robots are having a tough time navigating snow like this, imagine what it’s like for parents with strollers and people who have mobility challenges. The suburbs clear snow from sidewalks and crosswalks as a city service, Chicago should too.

My head is going to explode. Automobile crashes have churned out millions of injuries and tens of thousands of deaths annually for ~a century. Yes, robot cars are a less bad version of the worst thing, but we have safe alternatives available NOW: walk, bike, transit.

If you read any historical diaries, you will find very quickly that it didn't take long at all for women to realize being breeding stock wasn't fun. It was a huge reason women became nuns.

"My parents have been married for 75 years but few have noticed. Most of their friends have died. I contacted 6 local news stations and the Union Tribune newspaper giving details so they could do a story on their lives. Not one response from anyone. I think living into your 90's

I highly recommend this article for anyone who still thinks that LLMs are still "only predicting the next token". It's long and unsettling but worth the read.

One of Sydney’s long-standing design flaws has finally been addressed, with a dedicated ramp replacing 55 stairs at the start of the Harbour Bridge cycleway.

We could improve high school student performance by starting school at 8:30 instead of 7:00. I’ll never understand why elementary school starts later than high school. Elementary kids are up and energized by 6 a.m. Half of my first-period class is asleep, and another 20% is late.
