No, it's not about the election! A rising share of people leaving prison are 55+. And Dr. Jess Grosholz et al show how the jobs they can get are too demanding physically ("demolition, raking leaves, shoveling") or technically ("everything is a computer"). tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

So excited to see this out Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency! We looked at young adult arrest trajectories from 1960-2018 & found big changes over time - 👀 the figures esp. last decade. Adult role attainment was assoc w/ quicker declines but not level of arrests. Takeaway: historical context matters.

In Minneapolis, we've heard a lot about carjacking since 2020. Our new article shows how it rose and dispersed spatially after the George Floyd murder and ensuing unrest, more so than homicides. -w/ Allison Lind Susan Mason & Ryan Larson in @socscimed sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

In 2020, there was the largest one-year increase in homicide since 1960. This year, the US is experiencing the largest decrease. What's driving the spike and the decline? Gun crime. Here's a graphic of non-gun homicide to make that point.

This is so cool! Not only do they provide a great example of Simpson’s paradox, but they throw in positive selection bias, too. If only I were still teaching stats and methods! Amazing work.
