If you were recently required to use only "authentic" student assessments in your courses/programs, can we agree to use the Tukey-esque "authnetic" until authenticity is established. Statisticians are experts in learning. I am not aware of their use of "authentic".

"Fake news"complicates scientific reporting. And, a recent compilation of surveys about the public trust in science indicates little has changed (yet?) from the 1970s. Real news! blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/t…

Interesting paper about how better diversify research by considering not only the composition of the research teams, but also their methods and questions. nature.com/articles/s4156…

Nilanajan Chaterjee's article in Nature nature.com/articles/d4158… is an insightful illustration of how basic and epidemiologic research can be translated to improve clinical decisions using risk models.

Drop the p-value! And - has "causal inference" become the new p-value - widely used; complicated; lacking in transparency; and often misinterpreted. Is the problem the adjective "causal" for otherwise useful methods? Do we need an "antihubrisine" (Tukey, 1986)

Our hearts are broken for the loss of Joyce Feinberg and 10 other Jews, killed because they were Jews. Their murderer posted his rationale by citing our President's trope (invaders at the border). Repudiate the rise of Fascism on Nov 6.

Beth Am Baltimore had 1,000+ people in its "Show-up for Shabbat" service yesterday; about half were non-members: clergy, politicians, neighbors, friends. Rabbi Daniel Burg's prior shabbat service: On the Precipice of Violence is at youtube.com/watch?v=DYCLpz…

I am wondering about our shared experience with those from other countries and generations where fascism ultimately emerged. David Zeger suggested this Toni Morrison 1995 lecture leeannhunter.com/gender/wp-cont…

Encountered this wonderful paper by Peter Imrey and Phil Dawid that resolves a "controversy" about use of population rates to assess an individual's risk. It is must reading for public health, policy, legal and other students and for all statisticians. doi.org/10.1080/233044…

US-Mexico Wall advocates point to Israel's border barrier as relevant evidence of effectiveness. Facts: >90% of Israel's barrier is fence; walls are only used in cities and at suicide bombing sites; Israel considers itself to be in a state of war.

#BaltimoreRATS (B'More's Responsible Adults Transcending Sophistry) from the Mt. Washington Garden Club shown with part of their harvest, half of which goes weekly to Our Daily Bread. Kudos to Elijah E. Cummings and Baltimore Mayor!

I woke up to the news that the U.S. has withdrawn from the WHO, a public health mistake that must be reversed. We must reverse this mistake as soon as possible. Academics and professionals need to act now.
