Fall is here! That means activity in your compost pile will slow down as temperatures get cooler. You can help these microorganisms by continuing to add material to your pile and not turning it during the winter to maximize heat retention.

Let’s be clear! Just because it’s glass does not mean it can go in your recycling. Only glass bottles and jars belong in recycling programs. All other glass items should be donated if in good shape, reused, repurposed, or disposed of in the trash. #RecycleRightNY

Recent research found a plastic tea bag steeped in hot water can release 11.6 billion microplastic particles and 3.1 billion nanoplastic particles! It's time to consider using loose leaf tea strainers instead of single use tea bags. Infographic from the Ethical Consumer.

It’s easy as pie to recycle glass the right way! Only glass bottles and jars should go in the recycling. Items like measuring cups, pie plates, and baking dishes don’t belong in home recycling programs. #RecycleRightNY

Now is the time to harvest any finished compost from the bottom of your pile or move your partially decomposed organics to another pile to make room for your new scraps through the winter.

Have jack-o'-lanterns from Halloween? Be sure to leave them outdoors for animals, or put them in your compost pile! Alternatively, bring them to a pumpkin smash like the ones being held at The Radix Center on 11/9 or Veteran's Field on 11/2 hosted by Grow Amsterdam NY.

Recycling just five plastic bottles provides enough fiber to create one square foot of carpet or enough fiber fill to fill an entire ski jacket. Always recycle clean, empty bottles and check to see if the items you purchase are made with recycled content. #RecycleRightNY

Instead of shopping indoors today why not spend time outdoors? It could be as simple as walking around your neighborhood, or involved as hiking in the Adirondacks. Check out dailygazette.com/article/2018/0… for some local ideas.

We have a message to deliver! Next time you receive a package in a cardboard box remember to empty out packing peanuts, bubble wrap and air pillows, remove as much tape as you can, and flatten boxes before putting them in your recycling bin. #RecycleRightNY

Raise your hand if you have cardboard boxes at home from online shopping! When you recycle all those cardboard shipping boxes they’re made into new paper bags, paperboard packaging for things like tissues and cereal boxes, and new cardboard boxes. But only if you #RecycleRightNY

Remove packing materials before recycling cardboard boxes. Many packing materials like bubble wrap and air pillows are recyclable but must be recycled separately at retail drop off locations. To find a drop-off location visit: plasticfilmrecycling.org
