Niantic disabling regular AR catching is just horrible, no way to sugarcoat it. People didn’t catch in AR mode because it was ‘cool’ or because it showed real life surroundings. People caught Pokémon this way because it became the fastest and most efficient way to play and

"It's just one second!" is a poor counter argument on this recent AR change. "Just one second" done a million times is "just" a million seconds. But, even on a smaller scale like 3 hours of community day, 1 second wasted 1200 times is 20 minutes wasted. If the game were down

It doesn’t need to be like this. This is a design choice by Niantic. When piggybacking was first released you’d just end up in a new lobby where others could join or piggyback off of you. They intentionally made it worse for no clear reason.
