Official REFLOW project kick-off meeting. #H2020 project @ETNReflow works on sustainable phosphorus recovery from dairy processing waste. ESR's 10-13 focus on the system analysis regarding social, economic and environmental sustainability. How can we achieve a #circulareconomy?

Setting up a pot trial to investigate Fertilizer Replacement Value #FRV of Dairy Processing Sludge #DPS is a slow one: Soil collection, air drying and hand sieving and then more hand sieving and then some sieving....did I mention sieving Wenxuan Shi #teagascJC 🌈Karen Daly

Finally finish soil sieving for the pot trial of Fertiliser Equivalence Value of diary processing sludge @ETNReflow. Extremely hot weeks in the poly tunnel 😅

Source A on the left draining from cultivated land in a mixed arable rotation, source B on the right draining from land that hasn’t been tilled for over 100+ years. A = My Farm, B = A134 😜

1/Out on a dairy farm today checking out work completed and planning ahead for more tricky scenarios beside bridges to stop the connection between runoff and waters: Steep roadways on both sides will near diversion bars and bridge needs to be sealed off.

2/Some diversion water bars installed at key locations to take runoff off roadways before they can interact with surface water or drainage ditches - here into buffer area which far exceeds 1.5 m.

3/Situations where you have evidence of runoff from roadway going into waters. =No off the shelf solution so need to figure out each challenge -Can you take the pressure off before the bridge -How can you seal off the bridge edges -Is there enough buffer area to divert #noteasy

4/ Need to divert roadway runoff away from ditches and streams? Need an area to receive this water like a field or a natural area (like in photo). These areas can help the runoff infiltrate and drop sediment, pathogens and nutrients before delivery to waters - they are buffers.

A project farmer has infilled his farmyard connection drain and installed a swale and percolation unit to filter silt from a farmyard access road (mid-works) while also cambering the roadway away from existing field drains.

We have walked the length and breath of an intensive dairy farm in SE Ireland: -Installed water diversion bars to divert roadway runoff into buffer areas such as fields away from waters. They take the pressure off down-gradient.

Open bridges at the bottom of slopes pose a difficult scenario. -Roadway runoff can flow off the bridge directly. -The roadway leading to both sides of the bridge need management -Up-slope areas need attention to take pressure off lower parts

At river crossings lots of areas for runoff to enters waters -these sections need practical solutions and diversion of roadway runoff to buffer areas. As work below develops we will post photos.

Trial Installation of ceramic cup nests to examine leachate at 0.9 m depth under mixed swards. Very exciting as we will have multiple sites all over Ireland soon. #teagascJC #WATERNET #nitrogen

The contributing area to roadway runoff can be very large, all of which may be delivered to waters at a delivery point e.g. ditch Here 200 m stretch of roadway contributes to runoff entering a ditch that is then connected to a stream. #breakconnectivity #intercept_the_flow

Farm roadside water troughs encourage cows to stop and defecate and urinate - leaving a source of nutrients on the roadway. Anything that impedes or slows cows will lead to higher nutrient source on roadways.

Roadway sections before underpasses impede cow flow and lead to defecation and urination to increase. Make sure these nutrient sources are not connected to waters. Is the underpass tank connected to waters?
