#MyNameIs Rujeko. Ru-jeh-ko. Not Rujeeko or Ruheko or Ruyeko or Rujerko (middle school🙄) or anything else. It’s a #Shona name meaning radiance. All my life I’ve corrected the dis/mispronunciations of teachers, friends, friends’ parents, bosses, colleagues & honestly? Try harder.

My mother’s name is Fadzai. Fah-dz-aye. Another #Shona name: to bring joy. My daughters name is Zenzele. Zen-zeh-leh. An #Ndebele name: to do for oneself. There is so much nuance to these meanings, to these names. Listen when I tell you what #MyNameIs, & then say it. Correctly.
