Historically, however, the Church has been inconsistent in its approach to popular piety, with only the sort of popular piety the Church approves of being validated. It’s very hard for hierarchical organisations to truly value bottom-up, organic popular religion

Today marks one year since the publication of my book on the Protestant commentaries on Aristotle’s Ethics. I am thankful for the interest that many have shown in this seemingly obscure topic. But it isn't so obscure, so there should actually be much more interest. Tolle, lege!

9 May 1536: Henry VIII's son Henry Fitzroy attends the execution of Anne Boleyn for adultery & incest #otd (NPG) This was considered a sign of favour. He’d already been treated to viewing the execution of five priests two weeks earlier.

Something I was not expecting to find today—someone who, in 1701, claimed a miraculous healing by the intercession of James II at the Bénedictins Anglais.

Last night, on a whim, I decided to look at my family tree (I am the family genealogist). After following up some hints on a few previously dead ends, I discovered that, on my Dad’s side, I’m descended from colonial Pennsylvania Quakers. Extremely cool!
