In order to #savelives, #disaster researchers often have to ask difficult questions like, "How do people die in #floods?" This excellent article sheds some light. theconversation.com/what-is-a-flas… via The Conversation U.S. #PlanetaryHealth Planetary Health Alliance Engineering@Vanderbilt

"How long can you tread water?" -God to Noah (as told by Bill Cosby) This workshop highlighted one of a myriad of ways needed to address the impacts of #ClimateChange. #PlanetaryHealth

This is the difference between a #GeoHazard and #Disaster. A #landslide happens in #Singapore (where nothing EVER happens...) in the middle of the night, injuring one. The canal was cleared the next day, reducing flood risk. #DisasterRiskReduction blogs.agu.org/landslideblog/…

This park didn't flood during #HurricaneSandy, yet it is to be moved as part of a $221 M #resiliency plan. This money could be spent on marginalized, at risk communities. #environmentaljustice #PlanetaryHealth Duke Environment nytimes.com/2022/10/21/nyr…

A DukeGeothermal Do-over. After drilling down ~20m, Durham Basin sediment collapsed around the drill stem, locking things up. Drilling resumed today, this time with "telescopic" casing to prevent another downhole collapse. Duke Environment Duke Engineering #PlanetaryHealth

This #DurhamBasin sandstone outcrop in the Duke Forest is a great example of some of the #TriassicBasin sediments we drilled through on Central Campus. Students will start working on core descriptions soon! #GeologyInAction #GeothermalPotential
