Fully 80% of papers at UIST from 1990-2010 have been cited by US patents. 20% overall at CHI+CSCW+ Ubicomp+UIST; 13% of papers at all ACM SIGCHI sponsored venues. AAAI/IJCAI are 5%, ACL/EMNLP/NAACL are 11%, CVPR/ICCV/ECCV are 25%.

One thing I wish I knew the day I started my PhD in CS/AI: Reading about the history of technology often leads to novel ideas about the future. Ignorance of the history often leads to sloppy research. Starting point? Read Science & Technology Studies (STS) literature.

In IEEE VIS, we are going to present two projects related to VR/AR, VIS, and HCI: my first Ph.D. student, Sungwon, will present our embodied data transformation system in VR, and Qian Zhu led a project about compositing multiple VIS into one in VR.
