Much discussion about benefits of outreach teams in mental health. And promises to “learn the lessons” from the Nottingham tragedy - a phrase that infuriates families. But the real question is why we unlearned past lessons & what this tells us about future safety. 🧵

Wendy Burn CBE (She/her) In my experience it's because of the need to name a bed, which is not known at time of assessment..so Sec 2 is used. Everything consistently comes down to woeful resourcing, and the fantasy that all mental healthcare can be provided in the community

Mental Health services are in the news a lot at the moment with many calls for reform and so I have been thinking very generally about what I learned from years of trying (& often failing) to improve MH and social care services. A 🧵:

Why we need to be careful about asking questions and apportioning blame in cases like the Nottingham triple murders. Excellent thread.

Nuwan Dissanayaka I was once at a mandatory risk assessment course when a young non- medic described seeing a middle aged , divorced man who had recently been made redundant and was expressing suicidal ideas . Her conclusion was that he was "not serious". I said she must bring him in immediately/

I don't know who the "Sean Lintern" is in this story but good to know ministers were worried about him. Hats off to 🌹THE LAMPARD INQUIRY🌹 for getting the inquiry she and the other families deserve, in spite of this behaviour by Rt Hon Nadine Dorries telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/09/0…

Sad story of suicidal Martin Stringer who was found, sectioned, but went home & killed himself as no bed offered. Why not is complicated. Bottom line, there aren’t enough mental health beds to keep people safe. Old, well known fact. So why no action? mentalhealthcop.wordpress.com/2024/09/11/mar…

All good. Of course. Totally obvious. Some days I just can’t be bothered to understand why things have to be so bad.

On world mental health day, beyond all the ‘it’s okay not to be okay’ & clichés shared, pls remember those of us who are constantly trying to manage & deal w/ the stigma of having severe mental illness I am not ashamed to have schizophrenia, but it does come with challenges

David_Shiers makes a v. powerful point about how disempowered he felt as a parent in the mental health system, (even with his privileges as a white, articulate, healthcare professional who was used to being listened to). A feeling that's never left him. We must do better #CMHP24

“Dr Mulligan said: "There's this big community transformation that's happening at the moment and that community transformation I'm putting in inverted commas because we don't have any funding for it in Manchester." And anyway, transformation is a council-speak for cuts.
