“My favorite job was building a landing strip for drones at the El Paso International Airport. It was something different than I was used to, so it was exciting.” -Dwayne Williams, #LIUNA Local 1191

“Right now, I'm working on a project that will provide more power for the QLine in Downtown Detroit. Once we're done, the QLine will run more efficiently and safely. Getting to see the direct benefit of my work like that makes me feel good." – Chad Smith, #LIUNA Local 1191

“We have a couple young guys on this site. When they first start, a lot of them want to get other jobs because it's hard work. I tell them to pay attention to the Union benefits. After a couple months, they realize that, and decide to stay.” – Jesus Garcia, #LIUNA Local 1191

“When I joined the Union, I went from making $10 an hour to double that, plus great benefits. In the Union, I’m an equal. I don’t expect any special treatment because I’m a woman. I earn the same wage as a man, and I’m very proud of that.” – Linda Vandike, #Laborers Local 1076

"I want young people to know that it's okay to go into the trades. It's a great route. School is not for everyone. It wasn't for me. I feel like I've learned way more now in the Laborers Union than I ever did in college about the real world." – Matt Henrich, #Laborers Local 355

Congratulations to MASCI Apprentice of the Year, Shandra Dunn! “It feels groundbreaking. Some people didn't think I would make it this far. But I’m not surprised because I’ve always liked building stuff and playing in the mud. Once I became a Laborer, I haven't looked back."

"When you walk into one power plant, it's nothing like the last one. Every job is unique. I could go from a power plant to a paper mill to an abandoned factory to a house. That kept me interested." -Jeff Smrz, #LIUNA Trainer, Local 499

"I'm a drummer, and I played Latin music in Puerto Rico. My wife and I moved to the U.S. for our children's education. Six months before we moved, I started working construction so that I would have new opportunities to pursue in the U.S." – Eddy Garcia, #LIUNA Local 1098

Former Laborer, David Nadeau, helped with recovery efforts after 9/11. In a recent interview, he reflected on the experience: "At Ground Zero, the #Union construction presence was awesome. It was a dangerous environment, but all of the trades worked together to make it safer."

“I recently got laid off from my job of 3 years. I decided to take some training classes and join the Laborers Union. I grew up seeing my mom work construction. I was like, ‘If my mom can do it, I can do it!’ I start work next week." – Yadira Cordova, #LIUNA Local 1191

"As a Superintendent, I make sure our work gets done on time. I try to be firm and hold people accountable, but also acknowledge when things are going well. I think that is a big part of why I'm successful in my position." – Eddy Garcia, #LIUNA Local 1098 (Pictured with his son)
