Polychelidan #lobsters are not widely known, because they now live only in deep waters. We re-described a small #fossil species with weird bulbous claws, Teruzzicheles popeyei (named after Popeye💪) and show it is related to extant polychelids and like them lived in deep water.

Even more groundwater biodiversity… I am thankful for China’s groundwater loaches-top to bottom: Taiji Cave Loach (Oreonectes anopthalmus), blind cave loaches: (Paracobitis typhlops), (Triplophysa macrocephala), (Oreonectes sp.), (Tryplophysa sp.), (Tryplophysa sp.).

A rarely-observed Tundra Bumble Bee (Bombus hyperboreus) was spotted in Norway by natur-heimat. It’s the #WildlifeWednesday Observation of the Day! More details at: inaturalist.org/observations/2…

Only discovered 20 years ago, Tiktaalik was an important fossil find in understanding the water to land transition in vertebrates. #FossilrFriday #UMMP

#FossilFriday brings you this mid Devonian Kettneraspis. Love a spiny fella. But missing his head. This other photo is just a partial head but look at that one genal spine (really zoom, thing just keeps going). Really shouldn’t be that long for any Kettneraspis I’ve seen. Weird

Agapostemon bees are nothing if not persistent and this A. subtilior female proves it - still in action in December. She must be one of the last ones (I’d say “of the season” if native bee seasons of old still held…) around here. [Alameda, CA 12-1-24] #bees #nativebees

In the deep, imagining each day as eat-or-be-eaten is easy. It is cold and dark; resources are limited. But some wonderful animals in the Ocean are one made of many, working together, like this siphonophore, an ocean drifter of single cells working in concert. #ChileMargin2024
