I am speaking at FOSDEM on Sunday about how you can make complex MySQL queries run faster by rewriting them.

The more I work with the intricacies of MySQL's semijoin implementation, the more I am convinced that this should rather have been solved by implementing cost-based query transformations.

For a long time it puzzled me that that InnoDB spends a lot of time in rec_get_offsets_func(). I mean, why would finding the offsets to the fields of a record take so much time? Then I realized that this is the first access to the record, so the any cache misses will happen here.
