Periodic reminder that if you think your state has a reasonable rate of incarceration, look at the total rate of people in prison/jail AND on probation and parole. “Progressive” states like Rhode Island keep as many people under control as “tough” states like Louisiana.

When I moved to Louisiana 13 years ago, they wouldn’t let me vote. 7 years later we changed that. Now, some in #lalege want to make me a non-citizen again. #vote @FIPVOTENOLA Voters Organized to Educate

If your county government claims a shiny new jail is needed to help people "get services," you're welcome to refer them to the mythbusting section of our "Whole Pie" report. Jails have never offered anything remotely close to real healthcare. It's doubtful they would start now.

Since 2015, nearly 1,200 loved ones have died in Louisiana prisons and jails. This heart wrenching story from Richard A. Webster sheds light on just how dangerous prisons like Angola are for those dependent on medical care. New tough on crime laws will only make it worse.

Eight months after IL abolished cash bail, experts are seeing promising trends in their criminal justice system. Jail populations are down, with no alarming spikes in crime reported. This is a path for a more equitable future #CriminalJustice #BailReform bit.ly/4bxHozL

Gay, lesbian, & bisexual people are subjected to especially inhumane treatment behind bars. They are 10x as likely to be sexually victimized by another incarcerated person, and 2.6x as likely to be victimized by staff.

Louisiana’s prison population could DOUBLE thanks to new legislation that eliminates discretionary parole & implements truth-in-sentencing laws. Lawmakers frame these as “public safety” measures but increased criminalization & incarceration never make communities safer. 🧵

We’ve seen a troubling uptick in the harmful language being used by both political parties this election season. We encourage everyone––political figureheads included––to embrace person-centered language that doesn't work to stigmatize people.

When kids don’t have adequate food, they act out, are tired and can be disruptive. They’re then labeled the problem child and disciplined instead of looking for the root cause. Stop throwing our kids away to the prison pipeline and feed them!
