The Striped Bass/Striper/Rockfish (Morone saxatillis) is a fish that needs no introduction. It is the state fish of MD, VA, NY, NH, RI, NJ, and SC, It's an iconic US east coast fish that is commercially and recreationally important and has been stocked around the world. #sciart

The Bay Anchovy (Anchoa mitchilli) may be small, but they are one of the most common fishes along the east & gulf coasts. It is an important prey item for many gamefish, seabirds, and marine mammals. Their giant mouths help them filter out plankton, their fave prey! #SciArt

Bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix) may not seem like it, but they are quite the unique fish! They are the only member of the family Pomatomatidae & are widely distributed around the temperate and tropical world in coastal and pelagic habitats, except for most of the Pacific. #SciArt

Cool shot of a baby chain catshark (Scyliorhinus retifer) by Ella Nicklin showing off its amazing bristle-like coat of skin teeth.. there are thousands of erupted dermal denticles covering the body. Each one is made of the hardest materials in nature and ready for action!⛓️😸🦈

Thrilled to share this preprint from my postdoc w/ Joanna Kelley Studying Zoarcoidei, we detected gradients in antifreeze protein (AFP) copy number across habitat temperature and pressure driven by homologs translocated out of an ancestral AFP array biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Literally a guy at the farmers market yesterday asked me if octopuses are aliens. No, they are pretty established as a mollusc, which are very much known for being “of this planet”

Alexis (undergrad) just knocked it out of the park at the SU summer research showcase, despite final data arriving yesterday! They will be presenting their work on mummichog behaviors ⁦SICB⁩ #SICB2025! Alexis is currently in the market for a grad program on fish behavior!

Sheepshead Minnows (Cyprinodon variegatus) are not true minnows, but are pupfish (Cyprinodontidae), a type of killifish (Cyprinodontiformes). Unlike true minnows (Cyprinidae) that lack teeth, killifish have teeth and are sometimes called "toothcarps", which is evident in this one

My first undergrad’s first author manuscript was not rejected by a journal! Revisions are required, but they are all reasonable, so thanks to the two anonymous reviewers that gave constructive (not mean) feedback! Brings me back to my first paper as an undergrad. So proud!

The Little Skate (Leucoraja erinacea) has to be one of my favorite pieces to make! Note all of the little thorn-like dermal denticles across the body, which have a similar structure as teeth (with enamel-like materials and dentine) to protect the skate #SciArt #SciComm
