Thomas Fallon There is no one else doing this kind of work in procycling. Total kudos. This is the only real view on what is actually going on and how it can be fixed

It was an honour to be invited by Prof. Xavier Bigard from UCI alongside Neil to present Tour de France™ on the importance of injury surveillance to reducing injury rates across men’s and women’s pro peloton A key step to informing and evaluating preventative steps.

Remarkable insight from Michael Woods on safety in cycling. I often criticize the lack of good, transparent epidemiological data on cycling risk (describe the problem if you want to fix it). This is a manifestation of the tension that is created when that is lacking

Our systematic review and meta-analysis, published today in BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine is the first to explore injury and illness patterns across all competitive cycling disciplines.

🔍 Key findings 👇🏼 🧵
Thomas Fallon (@tfallon_physio) 's Twitter Profile Photo

✅ BMX has the highest injury rate (4.59 injuries/365 days); para-cycling has the highest illness prevalence (3.89/365 days). ✅ Upper limb injuries dominate across disciplines, especially in BMX (65%). ✅ Skin abrasions and fractures are the most common injury types.

Thomas Fallon (@tfallon_physio) 's Twitter Profile Photo

✅ Concussions vary across disciplines, highlighting diagnostic challenges (Track, concussions = 13.8% of known injury types. Similar to our Pro road cycling study with Uno-X Mobility Cycling. Our SR found, in road cycling, concussions = 4.6% of known injury types. mdpi.com/2075-4663/13/1…

Thomas Fallon (@tfallon_physio) 's Twitter Profile Photo

✅ Gastrointestinal and respiratory illnesses are most prevalent. ✅ High proportion of Cardiovascular illnesses in Road Cycling - Important screening consideration for all levels of cyclists. ✅ Gaps exist in cyclocross, gravel, indoor, trials, & esports cycling.

🛠️ The findings emphasise the need for: • Standardised surveillance methods • Targeted prevention strategies (e.g., Dyneema clothing for abrasion protection) • Concussion protocols tailored to cycling • Greater research in underrepresented disciplines
