The NC State Putnam team placed in the 82nd percentile out of 477 institutions in the 2024 William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition, the top undergraduate math contest in the U.S. and Canada. Blan Morrison, Mason McElroy, Coleman Hines, and Everett Tucker were top scorers.

The Association for Women in Mathematics hosted SK Day this past Friday, in honor of Sonia Kovalevsky. They had students ranging from 6th-11th grade come and participate in workshops to help them see what math can look like outside the classroom.

On Saturday, April 12th, Dr. Erik Bates and grad students: Brandon Koprowski, Bobby Jarrell, and Troy Larsen brought the fun of math to the STEM Fair. This is an event for K-12 students with disabilities and their families and friends who are interested in learning more STEM.

Please join me in congratulating Kailash Misra in being named an Alumni Distinguished Graduate Professor. This prestigious honor celebrates exceptional graduate-level teaching at NC State, and Kailash will hold this title for the duration of his faculty appointment.

On April 16, We had a successful collaboration between the Math Honors Program, led by Dr. Min Kang and the SUM Series which showcased the research of our honors students. Congratulations to our Math Honors students on their impressive presentations!

Deidre Hartley was nominated for this year’s College of Sciences Awards for Excellence in the “Public Service” category for SHRA employees. This is the highest honor awarded to non-faculty employees at NC State, recognizing exceptional contributions and service.

Meet one of our DRUMS REU Teams! This Summer, we're diving into Spatiotemporal Double Machine Learning. We are developing a new method of causal inference and applying it to data from the deforestation rates in Cambodia.

Stepan Paul is one of seven artists whose work is being featured in a new show being held at Composite on Fifth, the Gallery of MoMath on Thursday, June 19, at 6:30 pm. This exhibition brings together the artists whose work is rooted in the visual language of curved spaces.

DRUMS REU Spotlight: Our team is diving deep into the challenge of estimating global sea surface temperatures using only limited observational data. They are testing linear vs. nonlinear methods to see which offers the best reconstructions

This summer, Gabriela Ramon, Geena Sarnoski, and Vasishta Tumuluri are tackling a research project titled: Multifidelity Sensor Placement in Bayesian Inverse Problems. Their work focuses on designing a smart, efficient algorithm to determine the best places to install sensors.

Congratulations to Yairon Cid Ruiz, Zane Li, Tye Lidman, Nathan Reading, Teemu Saksala, and Seth Sullivant for receiving the Simons Foundation’s 2025 Travel Support for Mathematicians Award! This award provides each a 5 year travel grant.

The academic community is mourning the loss of Dr. Nicholas Rose, Professor Emeritus and former Head of the Department of Mathematics, who passed away at the age of 101. Dr. Rose led the department from 1968 to 1977.

Our department had a large group of current and former NC State students and faculty meet up to attend the Society for Mathematical Biology Annual meeting in Edmonton, CA.

This summer, two of our faculty members,Yairon Cid-Ruiz and Jacob Matherne  took part in Collaborate@ICERM, a highly selective program hosted by the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM) at Brown University.

Our first Colloquium for the year will be given by Dr. Emiel DenHartog (NCSU) on Monday, September 15, from 4:15–5:15 pm, in SAS 4201.

Andrew Sageman-Furnas studies the geometry of nets and he was involved in the research in figuring out the shape changes and implications of how to dance on the nets (imagine trying to stand, let alone *dance*, on a hammock!?).
