Pakistan, a country that cannot buy oil from its neighboring country and lets millions slide back into poverty every year, has banned all forms of expression and social media sites, and abducts its own citizens every day, is celebrating "independence day".

Wrote a #LongRead for Independence Day (amid Internet slowdowns, a blocked X, and the descent of civil liberties) – on the country's first decade, and the fight for East Bengal. Two partitions: polemics, purges, and Pakistan's first opposition party. dawn.com/news/1852072/t…

What Fraud Isa is saying is: "The rumors of me having a tiny bit of dignity and not accepting an extension are highly exaggerated."

Never in Pakistani history have women been so widely and regularly abducted by an opreasive government - military or civilian.

🇵🇰 is a common law jurisdiction, hence the role of precedent. We already have a ‘constitutional court’: the High Courts + SC. A separate constitutional court is from civil law countries, and is alien to our legal system. It would near-destroy the current SC’s powers and ambit.

Ours is (in theory) a parliamentary democracy, in which independent judges are crucial. Any amendment that hijacks the appointments process, upends the current courts, and cements electoral theft, will damage Pakistan long after today's politics is over.

Absolutely Not. The constitutional package that has not been shared with the people of Pakistan, only partially leaked, is an attack on the independence of the judicial structure. A constitutional court, packed and headed by hand-picked 'desirable' judges, will be a disaster.

We face some of the darkest days in our history. Constitutional amendments are meant to reflect the deepest convictions of a nation, not tricks to subdue democracy through a subjugated judiciary. We face a fraud on the Constitution. Pity some judges will gladly accept this fraud.

Ex SCBA president Muneer A Malik & Faisal Siddiqi have issued a public statement wherein they urged legal fraternity & judiciary to resist & reject proposed amendments which are attacking independence of judiciary.

Everyone will be bought to win the night bcz they all have always been for sale. From the bar to the gulabi opp leaders to Dawn/lib journalists worried abt Gaza these days to the foreign correspondents looking for another gig to the activists looking for western aid.

The Supreme Court is being destroyed and replaced by a brand-new, even-more-supreme court, just one that’s junior to the PM. Piece today, on the 'amendment' that marks the final wrecking ball to judicial independence. dawn.com/news/1859875

CJP Qazi wasting no time to replace Justice Munib Akhtar on benches constitution committee after being aided by a presidential ordinance to put Justice Mansoor Ali Shah in minority! What a speedy collaboration for selective justice !

Lest we forget, the trash-fire procedure law was passed to stop the 90-day election ruling – a rump assembly thus mangled the Constitution without a 2/3rds majority. At all times, the law was a Trojan horse for the state to control judges (and force a bogus appeal). The result:
