On this day in 1990, Stephen Hawking visited Mount Wilson Observatory. A highlight of his visit: a stop at the 150-foot Solar Tower, where pioneering solar observations helped shape our understanding of the Sun & its influence on Earth.

Mount Wilson’s 100-inch telescope helped Edwin Hubble reshape our view of the universe. From discovering galaxies beyond the Milky Way to evidence of dark matter and new stellar types—it’s one of the most storied instruments in astronomical history.

In 1904, the Snow solar telescope arrived from Yerkes, launching the world’s first observatory for astrophysics. Its unique horizontal design captures sunlight via coelostat mirrors—revealing the solar spectrum. A trailblazing start to a century of discovery!

July 4 is Henrietta Swan Leavitt’s birthday. Though she worked at the Harvard College Observatory and never set foot on Mount Wilson, her discovery of the Cepheid period-luminosity relationship made our greatest astronomical breakthroughs possible.
