To echo Scott Morrison , teaching is SO misunderstood. It's so complex and not everyone gets it! It's important to do the hard work of uncovering the role(s) of a teacher.

I saw this a lot with the rapid transition to home-ish schooling due to COVID-19 this spring. Parents all suddenly realized that teaching is....a professional job that requires training!! What a concept! #ElonEd

MAJOR retweet. I had too many teachers in high school commuting 40+ minutes from the other side of town, figuring they knew what our classes needed, instead of listening to us. #ElonEd

A3: Whenever I do service trips through Elon, we talk about the difference between "working FOR" a group of people and "working WITH" them. Community relations isn't a one way street, where we just teach and that's it- its about working WITH families! #ElonEd

Very important nugget I learned in @jeffpcarpenter EDU 402 class: Switching the language from "parents" to "families" or "caregivers" can make a world of difference! #ElonEd

A4: I think it’s critically important as white people that we see ourselves in this racial arrangement (and are uncomfortable with it). Countering anti-blackness for me often means taking a deep dive into what whiteness is and how it operates in our institutions #ElonEd

It's not enough anymore to recognize that people have implicit biases. We know that. It's about unpacking those biases and looking at people with a different identity as an asset to society, not that they're lacking something. #ElonEd

This is so important! Classrooms are a safe haven- they shouldn't be told that their skin/hair/language/home/family is better or worse than someone- outer spheres of society are already working around the clock to do that. #ElonEd

Students have freedom; to be joyful, to express themselves, to open up when something is giving them struggle. A culture where these things are welcomed would also bring so much more out of our students. #ElonEd

Exactly! Young kids are already seeing all around them how people are different and how hateful people treat them differently. It's important to have these discussions at a young age to nip it in the bud. #ElonEd

If I could get picked on for my hair and skin and my different-colored parents when I was a kid, it's NOT too early to talk to your students about race. Period. #ElonEd

Thank you for participating in tonight’s #ElonEd chat on #BecomingATeacher—and special thanks to our guest melinda d. anderson for graciously co-moderating and for writing such an important book. The next chat is on 10/18, and the topic is #Election2020!
