If you do French at school, you have a head start with Romanian & Catalan. If you learn German, you open the door to Swedish & Dutch. If you study Spanish, Italian & Portuguese are great sequels. Once you start, there’s no limit to where languages can take you, ‘linguist’ or not.

If you can do French, you can elevate your English vocabulary. If you can do German, you understand more of English grammar. If you can do Latin, you can recognise so many new words and expressions. If you can do languages, you grow your world, and discover your own language too.

I fear for MfL and where this will leave both the subject & linguists both joining the sector and staying.

Heads who supported MFL by incentivising uptake, despite possible detrimental effect on P8 score, have just been kicked in the teeth by the Francis review, which succumbed to pressure from those heads who want to marginalise the subject

I fear MfL will end up being taught mainly in independent schools in the future. Worrying.

MFL will now die in many schools, especially those in challenging contexts, which is really sad.

Languages are not just another subject in school. Languages are about relationships, understanding and communication. They're about discovering a world beyond your own. They're full-on experiences you wouldn't enjoy otherwise. Languages take every one of us to another level.

I’m struggling to understand how triple science has more of a place than MfL. I hugely value science but most pupils don’t need more than two GCSEs in the sciences.
