When teachers say they don’t want to “add” trauma informed approaches or ABAR strategies, bc they want to “just teach” their content area, with all due respect: they’re wrong. This is not an add on. IT IS THE HOW. And it’s how teaching should have always been.

K-12 public education is under attack in our country. Educators and students, who have been through so much over the course of the past couple years, have been placed squarely in the crosshairs of vitriolic politics. 1/2

My conclusion: your children were safe (and would be safe in law school). They would be even safer tho IMO if they DID learn CRT. The Rufo-Lindsay-led McCarthyism against CRT is far more dangerous and may have set America back a half century or more in some regards. 18/18

For me, May 21st is freedom day. 226 years ago, a young woman made the incredibly bold decision to defy the POTUS. She ran so that she could live. As her story travels around the globe we celebrate Ona Judge as a model of courage. Happy Ona Judge Day!

Some grounding questions for this school year: What is my radical dream? Who am I am dreaming with? How am I living out that dream? The pull to move from a space of loss and worry will be strong this year, but the kids need us to DREAM!

Flawed policies written to please a conservative minority have consequences. If you think the impact of policies meant to keep “naughty books” out of schools is that ONLY those books you are complaining about are restricted, think again. #trustteachers #trustlibrarians

This week I spent time dreaming with educators across the country. It wasn’t a fluffy pursuit. It was deep, challenging, and meaningful work but you know what else it was? JOYFUL! Learning should bring joy. Lets have more of that this year. The kids need it and we do too!

Please don’t act like everyone loved my father then or authentically honors him today. He was assassinated. A 1967 poll reflected that he was one of the most hated men in America. Most hated. Many who evoke him today to deter justice would have likely hated him then.

Taking out student loans was the ONLY way that I could go to college. Me, always an academically inclined kid. Me, who went to a state school. I cannot tell you how many times I deferred payments bcz my starting teacher salary in 1995 was barely enough. A change is long overdue.

A teacher's inability to discuss slavery as freely as European wars inspired students in Georgia to fight against repressive policies that censor Black students from learning their history in the classroom. And they're winning! #teachertwitter splcenter.org/news/2022/09/0…
