1/n Exactly 71 years ago, David & Elizabeth Lack sat on this Pyrenean pass. They watched 100s of swallows, 1000s of dragonflies, 10,000s butterflies migrate. But it was the hoverflies in their vast multitudes that they described as the most remarkable migrants of all.

2/n Karl Wotton read this paper and was inspired to come to the Pyrenees and see whether, after so many years, this migration was still happening. Remarkably, it was! and he set up the The Genetics of Migration Lab research lab to study it further

My Best Cornish Moths No.2. As someone who studies insect migration, it is v pleasing to catch migrants in my garden trap. I had long wanted to see Vestal, a regular but scarce migrant from S Europe; in 2020 that dream came true when I caught 4. Here are 2 of them (1/2).

We're back in the Pyrenees for another year of #insectmigration research! Here's Karl Wotton 's video of Toby amongst the biggest butterfly migration day we've ever seen here!! Nearly all were clouded yellows, small whites and long tailed blues! Butterfly Conservation 🦋 🦋🦋
