Mark Dean is an American inventor and computer engineer. He led a design team for making a 1 GHz processor chip. He holds 3 of 9 PC patents for being the co-creator of the IBM personal computer released in 1981. In 1995, Dean was named the first ever African-American IBM Fellow.

Granville Woods was self-taught and received more than 50 patents. His inventions included the "Synchronous Multiplex Railway Telegraph," a device used to send messages between trains and stations. His work assured a safer and better public transportation system for US cities.

Charles Henry Turner was a zoologist known for his insect behavior studies, particularly bees and ants. Turner was the first African American to receive a graduate degree at U Cincinnati and earned a PhD from U Chicago. He spent most of his career as a high school teacher.

Marie Daly was an American biochemist and the first African-American woman in the United States to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry. Daly made important research contributions in protein synthesis, the relationships between cholesterol and hypertension, and muscle cell creatine uptake.

Guion Bluford is an American aerospace engineer, retired U.S. Air Force officer and fighter pilot, and former NASA astronaut. He is the first African American in space. He participated in four Space Shuttle flights between 1983 and 1992.
