First came 3C236 (1974), then came J1420-0545 (2008) after 34 years and now after 14 years came Alcyoneus- the largest giant radio galaxy of ~5 Mpc!  Low Frequency Array made it happen, continuing the Dutch telescope tradition of finding the largest of the giants. arxiv.org/pdf/2202.05427…

Two papers on Giant Radio Galaxies, by Martijn Oei In the first one, a catalog of 2050 (!) GRGs from Low Frequency Array LoTSS-DR2 is reported arxiv.org/abs/2210.10234 In the second, a GRG is used to estimate the temperature of the IGM arxiv.org/abs/2210.10156

Out today: An intergalactic medium temperature from a giant radio galaxy led by Martijn Oei with franco_vazza et al. Amazing dimensions: White box in right figure (radio) is the left figure (optical).

Excited to share our preprint, with Jo Warren, James Whittington, and Tim Behrens! Hippocampus famously supports memory and scene construction, but recent state-space models have also explained a wealth of hippocampal results. Maybe it does both? biorxiv.org/content/10.110… 1/10

Longest, strongest black hole jets of all-time discovered How large can a black hole jet get? With the new discovery of Porphyrion, the answer is at least 24 million light-years, and that was when the Universe was just half it's present size! bigthink.com/starts-with-a-…

BOOM 💥 Our nature paper is out and is featured on the front cover of the issue. The paper, led by Martijn Oei, is about a giant radio outflow (7 Mpc) from an active galaxy at z~0.9. This has potential implications on the magnetization of the LSS... nature.com/articles/s4158…

NEWS: Astronomers have discovered a black hole that’s blasting out the largest and longest jets of hot plasma ever observed. Nicknamed Porphyrion after the mythological Greek giant, this colossal jet system spans 23 million light-years, equivalent to lining up 140 Milky Way

I had the pleasure of creating an illustration for Martijn Oei and his team's article on their discovery of black hole jets on the scale of the cosmic web. Really proud to see this illustration today serving as the cover of the September 19 issue of nature magazine!

A massive discovery 🔭 Astronomers have spotted the largest plasma jets ever seen, streaming from a supermassive black hole 7.5 billion light-years away in a galaxy named Porphyrion. These jets span 23 million light-years!

This is the most corrupt bargain we've ever seen in American history: Elon Musk gave millions to fund Trump's campaign, and now Trump has given him the keys to our government. We are fighting this in Congress, in the courts, and in the streets. We will not back down.
