The argument that such a bill would reduce pressure on many threatened species subject to legal hunting for trophies is unfounded.

Dan Challender (@danchallender) 's Twitter Profile Photo

A more proportionate policy would be a smart ban, that is, exceptions would be made in circumstances where trophy hunting benefits species, hunting revenue is shared with local people, adaptive management and monitoring are in place, and the hunting area has good governance.

Really important thread by Dan Challender. Trophy hunting bans are often driven by stated #conservation concerns, so examining the evidence is vital. TH not a major threat to any species (& can have benefits), so import bans are unjustified & disproportionate re #conservation

🐘🌍 Our Wildlife Trade researchers have found proposed UK #trophyhunting legislation could actually harm the species it intends to protect. Most hunting trophies imported are from countries where hunted species populations were stable. Read more: i.mtr.cool/fddsqdlhtt

Great video here summarising the key points from our new paper on proposed #trophy #hunting import bans - the evidence shows that such trophy hunting bans are disproportionate, unlikely to help #conservation and in fact risk harms to people & conservation
