This account from a "security manager" at Manston detention camp written up in the Times is one of the most disturbing things I've ever read about the UK asylum system. "When the sun goes down at Manston, the crying and wailing begins" thetimes.co.uk/article/when-t…

The UK Government: ❌shuts down the Syrian, Afghan & children's refugee schemes ❌creates one online application form, ONLY for Ukrainians ❌ gives huge fines to airlines, ferries etc that bring refugees to the UK. Also the UK Government: Why are people coming by boat?!

Reasoned It's free at the point of use, unlike private healthcare. If you worry about affordability for lower earners, never promote a US-style alternative that costs more than twice as much - for worse outcomes eg on life expectancy. US at the far right on the graph👇 #savetheNHS

Yesterday was an odd day. As we heard of the worst waits for ambulances, A&E, cancer treatments, and operations in U.K. history, and as staff resignations reached record highs, right wing nut jobs argued £27k a year is enough for nurses and junior docs. Tories are killing the NHS

At this time some LOs on our children's cancer ward were on end of life care. 1 parent allowed to see them at a time except to hand over. Siblings, grandparents, friends not allowed. 1 time all the staff stood in a doorway to sing a last happy birthday - and feared for their jobs

Despite it being a current story, I’ve not got any upcoming guests on the podcast to talk about immigration/asylum. That’s cos I’ve had loads of guests before and the chats we had are still sadly relevant, if not more so. Here is a big old list if you wanna go back & listen:

There has been debate from all sides about recent @NHS strikes by The BMA @BMA_JuniorDocs The RCN vS Department of Health and Social Care Steve Barclay The government has a duty to the tax payers to spend in the best way possible for the country. Here is how a 20% rise in wages ACROSS the NHS impacts 🧵

‘We have been met by more radio silence from the government… but we do hope we are able to meet to bring this dispute to an end’ Vivek Trivedi on Sky News this morning. Asked about Acas involvement: ‘It’s a shame the government seems to be refusing that offer as well’

The government argument that higher public sector pay will bump up inflation was debunked by leading economist Stephanie Flanders on Laura Kuenssberg this morning. She says: ‘That’s not something economists tend to agree with’

Things we have no money for: nurses and doctors pay rises, housing refugees, meals for hungry children, help with cost of living Things we have money for:

Pay restoration not happening doesn’t mean ££ saved. There’ll just be a mass exodus Doctors are educated enough to do simple maths. Those who are striking are doing so not out of greed but as a last ditch attempt to preserve a functioning NHS. Goodwill doesn’t pay the bills

Dr Steve Taylor (@drstevetaylor) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Labour is fearful of saying it needs to pay Drs more Why - because generally Drs are reasonably if not well paid compared to average FACT Drs are costly & other countries are now paying more with better working conditions 30% leave Pay down 25-30% RETENTION KEY Wes Streeting

"Well go get a job that pays more" is the most frequent and most blancmange-brained gotcha that people use about the junior doctor strikes. EVERYONE'S ALREADY LEAVING! THAT'S THE EXACT PROBLEM! IF WE DON'T FIX THE PROBLEM THERE WON'T BE ANYONE LEFT!
