Hearing people are like joke-panicking about the fact that 2022 is pronounced “2020, too”. But like in ASL, 2022 loosely translates to “BIRD go PEACE-PEACE” and that’s honestly the energy I’m going into the new year with. Deaf people stay winning I guess. 😎

Recently read a thread in which linguists debated how inhumane it would be to force children into language deprivation…meanwhile massive numbers of deaf children are raised in severe language deprivation constantly. It isn’t a ‘what if’ topic. It’s happening.

If an English-German interpreter is hired, would we say they’re there just for the German person? Of course not. They’re there for both the German and English speakers. If an ASL-English interpreter is hired, why do we say they’re there just for the Deaf person? 🤔

Ugh…having to explain to OTs on FB why using ASL as a range of motion exercise when you do not sign is disrespectful… like you wouldn’t use French to improve oral motor skills.

The fact that Language deprivation still exists in 2022 shows the sad state of #DeafEd. ASL doesn’t hurt. Not being able to communicate does. #BilingualEd Language First

Language and the ability to stress what you need to SOOOO important. This is why I have taught and used sign with both kids before they could speak. For example, last night Carli was tired and done. In her defense, mom had missed bedtime grading papers.

In the middle of crying and screaming, I was still able to ask her questions and for her to answer. This helps so much to regulate overwhelming emotions. I just wish every child had this opportunity. Language First

1/2 There appears to be a bit of confusion about my post. Some turned this into a BSL v Makaton. My post is about an organisation who are in my view, are defrauding people into believing they are being taught sign language. When in fact they are being taught made up signs.

May is Language and Communication month! I love this image from Language First . As a Speech-Language Pathologist working with DHH children, this message rings so true. No matter the route- through the ears, eyes, or hands, language happens in the brain! #IamSHBC SpeechHearBC
