When monolingual students learn to read, they encounter phonics instruction with words they are likely familiar with. The same is not necessarily true for young multilingual learners. Specialized #multilingualsupport is necessary with vocabulary through authentic instruction.

Why do kids struggle w/reading comprehension? One overlooked reason: they're unfamiliar with the syntax of written language. We can fix that by teaching kids to WRITE complex sentences. The Writing Revolution @ClassroomWonder More in my latest Forbes post: forbes.com/sites/nataliew…

It can really challenge children to comprehend cataphoric & anaphoric references. Notice here how "it" has multiple referents even w/in a single sentence. Fortunately, we can use content-rich texts, explicit instruction, & discussion to help children learn to process these these.

Tier 1 instruction is for ALL learners. When finding more & more learners in need of services in Tiers 2 & 3, the FIRST thing to do is go back & look at Tier 1. Don't buy a program, add an intervention, or spend money. Do go & make sure Tier 1 is what it should be. That's it
