Take this opportunity to assess reading practices as students return to school. I am glad to see choral reading, which is a staple of music classrooms, as a smart alternative along with reading choice.

I believe that the fear mongering regarding CRT is intended to usher in the banning of any teaching of substance on the history of slavery and racism and on the current devastation of racism. And I oppose quoting my father to facilitate that fear and to usher in that banning.

What kind of world are we preparing students for? If it is the one from 2 years ago, then it's not what they are really going to experience. What do we need to do differently? How do schools need to change? theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…

There’s a student in your classroom right now, with their head down, in the back row. I promise you, that they have the answer to how we fix the education system. Put them at the center. In the front. Put them in the role of teacher. Watch our system transform.

Thank you to @easouzaponce and other students at Ballard High School for going public with your painful stories. Hopefully, Seattle Public Schools will recognize there's a failure in leadership that is harming their most vulnerable students. seattletimes.com/education-lab/…

My favorite line: from an equity perspective, if students who are being oppressed don't see and feel change, that means there's no change.

If I was still working and this happened, I would be checking out lots of books to myself and keeping notes on which student borrowed it from me.
