Important to reflect on what drives forest loss on #IntlForestDay. Criminality a major contributor in Asia where illegal cutting and trafficking of teak continues in the Mekong region, Myanmar. Large shipments of teak are being regularly seized in India near the border with Myanmar. A remote part of Asia with active illicit trade and important forest habitat - a place that needs attention

Southeast Asia forest loss has accelerated due to illegal logging and timber trafficking. Some crimes have time horizons, and at this rate there won't much habitat left here in a decade. 4000+ cubic feet/114 cubic metres of logs in Nagaland NE India adjacent to the Myanmar border. Quite a few shipments like this recently as timber trafficking has picked-up - markets and demand to the north, east and west. Usually overlooked and could use a little attention

Fair bit of illegal and valuable timber seized outside Vientiane Laos and likely destined for export. Unclear if going public is the end of it. And while some will be auctioned, some has already been destroyed (not without local criticism) laotiantimes.com/2021/08/31/aut…
