If in a Kroger in Detroit 32 years ago you saw Paul Simon in line and asked for his autograph and he said I'm not Paul Simon and you said come on, admit it I won't tell anyone and he smiled and signed your receipt, you met my father-in-law Dave Nielsen and he sends his best.

In the first 7 months of 2023, the city of Allen, Texas had a homicide rate of over 13/100,000 (i.e., higher than Nicaragua). In the first 7 months of 2024, the city had a homicide rate of zero. Love to see research on if/how such changes affect residents' mental health.

Chilling detail in this 60 Minutes: Some fentanyl overdose victims have died with naloxone in their hand, believing incorrectly that they would have enough time to use it if needed. cbsnews.com/news/reversing…

PMC life in America now has norms that (1) You will spend most of your waking hours working and (2) You must never date anyone with whom you work. I expect this reduces the rate of marriage formation.

Tried to watch this because Sheen is always very good (his co-star, Wilson was also) but there's just not enough here to sustain THREE HOURS of film. The drive for more "content" is bloating every project -- bring back ruthless editors!

Keith Humphreys My wife and I met at work, as did another lovely couple about the same time. But boy was there also a lot of pointless drama from the office romances that didn't pan out. Ups and downs. Like life. But HR hates those downs more and never gets invited to the weddings anyway.

Can we delete the phrase, "The race is close in the battleground states"? If the race were not close, it would not be a battleground state.

Researchers are finding alarming patterns associated with the legalization of sports betting: - "depletes households’ savings" - "increases the risk that a household goes bankrupt by 25-30%" - "leads to a roughly 9% increase in intimate-partner violence" theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…

Ran into Jerry Brown in the late 1980s when he was way out of office. But I had a feeling he would make a comeback simply because he was upbeat and even moreso *funny*. Relentlessly grim, scolding, and shaming politics is off-putting. If you want to win, smile.

San Francisco must fund recovery-first housing that has no drugs in it It is inhumane to force people by de facto requiring people to live in housing that is full of people abusing drugs PSH residents want recovery. Why won’t the city fund it?

This 500-year-old portrait may seem ordinary, but it's one of the most mysterious in history. There's so much detail that you can read every musical note on this small page. But look closer — an unsettling secret is hiding in plain sight... 🧵
