It’s an outrage that the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department would criminally investigate me as a reporter for doing my job. It’s the kind of action that’s aimed at intimidating journalists from digging into government agencies. (1/2) latimes.com/california/sto…

When the San Francisco Chronicle endorsed Kamala Harris for SF district attorney on Dec. 7, 2003, the headline was: "Harris, for Law and Order." -- "Kamala's Way," Page 53. Yes, she ran to the right of the incumbent on crime. That might be significant in 21 years later.

What happened to Victor the bear? Victor stole food and visitors’ hearts for years in Mammoth Lakes campgrounds and along lake shores. But when he was caught on camera swiping a camper’s leg, he became the center of an investigation. Full video here: youtu.be/_aEk5aOAjXE?si…

The departures of Mariel Garza, Robert Greene and Karin Klein are a serious loss—for Los Angeles Times but most of all for Southern California, which they’ve covered for decades. The ed board is now down to 3 writers. I’m heartbroken for my former team.

Thank you Paul Thornton for sharing this very personal family story. It is a reminder of the last century’s darkest chapter – and a cautionary tale. A must read.
