I saw this incredible c. 200 BC bronze statue of a boxer in Rome last week (at the Museo Nazionale) and I can't stop thinking about it. His hands... 200 BC! I mean wtaf

Collingwood: The artist must be a prophet, 'not in the sense that he foretells things to come, but in the sense that he tells the audience, at risk of their displeasure, the secrets of their own hearts.' (from 'The Principles of Art')

Writing a lecture on Murdoch's 'The Sublime and the Good' for my aesthetics class. Such a banging paper. Here she is throwing shade at basically all of contemporary moral philosophy #awaywithit

This, by Oliver Roeder, is fantastic: an account of how you manage to fix a 50-year-old spacecraft hurtling through interstellar space when nobody remembers how it works, and the data you need is possibly on 8-track tapes stored in someone's dad's garage ft.com/content/0f2dce…

Writing a lecture for my aesthetics class about Spotify's co-opting of music as a surveillance tool, and how this amounts to a deliberate attempt to turn music's emancipatory power against those who love it most. We'll see what the students make of this one...

Sartre: Writing isn't neutral description. To write is to act: it's to change things, for better or worse. Any writer must face up to the fact that his or her words are 'loaded pistols'. (From 'What is writing'?)

Forgive the 'dudes posting their Ws' tweet but: one of my students gave me flowers after my last aesthetics class yesterday. She said that the class had been 'a joy', and that it had reignited her passion for philosophy. I nearly cried 😭 Teaching is the best part of this job IMO

Looking forward to talking about musical expression today at the ASA in Chicago! (And also to reflecting on the obvious fact that nobody has ever looked cooler than Bill Evans)

Nice to see Trinity College's 2011 recording of the Howells Requiem selected as the best one available. Outrageously, however, the write-up makes no mention of my exemplary bellowing in the alto section classical-music.com/features/recor…

Am in grading jail at the moment, but it's actually fun (??) My students have written excellent essays on the philosophy of art, and many have used brilliant musical examples to illustrate their views. I'm getting so many banging listening suggestions out of the deal 💪

Amazing coincidence they finally have a year of profit after demonetizing 86% of songs on the platform… This is why we need the Living Wage for Musicians Act now! The tech bro heads of these companies make millions while artists make zero. Support the LWFMA!

Aesthetics people: I'm looking for things to read about the development of taste, i.e. the capacity for aesthetic appreciation. Not stuff about the judgment of taste: I'm specifically interested in what it is to *develop* one's taste, and how one goes about it. RTs welcome!

By 2028, AI-generated music will account for 20% of streaming platforms’ revenues & 60% of music libraries’ revenues. AI developers will net €4bn via unlicensed reproduction of existing music, with no compensation for musicians. Policymakers, wake up theguardian.com/music/2024/dec…

Philosophers who publish regularly: How many papers are you *actively* working on at any one time? (= working toward an outline, drafting, editing)

Jenny Judge (@judge_jen) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Turns out most of you work on 2 papers at a time, followed closely by those veritable machines who work on 4 or more simultaneously (phew)

I was interviewed by staff at my university about my work, how I came to philosophy (it involved thwarted creative writing ambitions, music psych, and an 80s-themed wedding band), and what I think of Melbourne (spoiler: It Is Good). Fun! blogs.unimelb.edu.au/shaps-research…
