The National Library of Scotland just officially bought Motherbunnet! Wait? What? Yes! THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF SCOTLAND JUST OFFICIALLY BOUGHT MOTHERBUNNET! 😜🥳🥳 I'm still a little stuck for words. (Apart from those ones 👆🏼)

Name that’s making me smile today: go-away birds. These African birds are known for grumpily yelling “g’wa-ay” when they’re disturbed. 📷: Bernard Dupont, CC BY-SA 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Term that’s making me smile today: spring ephemerals. They’re woodland wildflowers that grow stems and leaves early each spring, bloom briefly, produce seed, and then wither, often leaving no trace of their existence aboveground for the rest of the year.

Word that’s making me smile today: qarrtsiluni. In the Arctic, Inuk hunters wrote a song to honour each whale they took. They’d sit together quietly in darkness, waiting for the burst of creativity that would give birth to the song. That quiet expectation was called qarrtsiluni.

The Dirigible Balloon will be uploading more poems next week as part of their summer flight. Whereas this time the amount is half that of the massive number floated in October 2024, the quality and diversity of poems will still be something to celebrate. JH #PoetryForChildren 🎈

Today some Grade 3 students and I got our poetry-writing juices flowing by brainstorming uses for toothbrushes. They quickly moved from listing practical uses (cleaning household items) to discussing if trees could use toothbrushes to scratch their itchy bark. Kids are the best.
