Found this dude/dudette out for a stroll a sunny day in Cornwall. In Swedish the species is named grasswolf (gräsulv), sci name Macrothylacia rubi. In the UK the adult moth's reddish colour is presumably behind the name fox moth. It overwinters AND pupate in soil. So poofy #moth

Interesting animal migration fact: Blue whales fast during their yearly migration and this creates lines in their earwax plugs... And this how bluewhales are aged! The oldest individual aged this way was 110 years old. #animalmigration

Critical times for my PhD-bird in Sweden: the willow warbler The number of birds ringed in 2023 is half of that of 2020. Its is the most common bird in Sweden, so a severe decline may have far-reaching consequences. I hope the trend turns soon! mynewsdesk.com/se/naturhistor…

Anisozygoptera is neither dragonfly (Anisoptera) or damselfly (Zygoptera) in appearance, but something in-between. A very interesting group within Odonata with only one genus: Epiophlebia and only three species.

You rarely see foxes in Sweden, not even those that alledgedly live in central Stockholm. So when I see one in the UK it always feel special... and this little one was just snoozing on a shed in broad daylight! Luckily it did not scare the Easter bunny away

Apparently, when on migration, Chuck-will's-widow (a nightjar), switches from insects to a diet of co-migrant songbirds. And swallows them whole! - as described in this account fr 1899 from a steamer outside S Carolina, or by Owre 1966, as he disected one found dead in Florida

17 MILLION insects migrate through a 30m Pyrenean mountain pass every autumn! They fly through the mountains on their remarkable journeys from northern Europe (including the UK) into Spain and beyond for the winter! Our new paper is out right now: royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/epdf/10.10… 🧵

Wow, what a bird! Spent 5 hours with this little cracker and it showed amazingly. My first UK red-footed falcon and it was awesome to watch it hunt stooping like a hobby and hovering like a kestrel. More from the 5.5k photos taken to come. Elmley NNR KOS

Today was a really exciting day here on #insectmigration fieldwork in Tarifa. I spent the afternoon watching tens of Red-veined darters, Sympetrum fonscolombii, battle against the wind heading southwest! I doubt they'll try and cross the straits in a headwind, but it was very

I am incredibly sad to learn that Keith has passed away, I hope he is somewhere beautiful now. He told me himself some weeks ago that he was very ill. Like with all horrific news, I did not want to believe it.
