A clear grading purpose = informed grading decisions. When teachers establish a focused grading purpose, students, parents, & school leaders can better understand & use grades effectively. #competencybasedgrading

Not all standards are created equal. Teachers should prioritize those with endurance, leverage, & readiness for the next level—ensuring students master the most critical skills. #competencybasedgrading

I finished the novel Demon Copperhead last night, and I give it 5/5 stars. I found it to be a haunting, compelling novel that I couldn’t put down, but at times I didn’t want to continue—due to the topics of child poverty, child abuse, & opioid addiction in Appalachia.

Beware of the DOK wheel of doom! Norman Webb, creator of DOK, warns that this deceptive resource is an extreme oversimplification of his framework. His short article explains provides concise, helpful definitions of each of the 4 levels. edutopia.org/article/how-us…

Let's admit it: there are TOO MANY #standards to teach in depth IF the goal is for ALL students to reach proficiency. So prioritization is the only way to maintain such a goal. Larry's Ainsworth's guidance: Prioritize about 1/3, and designate the rest as supporting standards.

We love using Joe Feldman's white paper in our #grading & #assessment workshops to present empirical evidence for the use of equitable grading practices. It makes for great small group discussion!
