Bridget Phillipson has been utterly silent on redundancies in HE, her current brief. In her own Sunderland constituency the University has shed hundreds of jobs, across the North-East probably more like 1000 jobs have gone. Why should we trust what she says here? Come on TUC.

I’ve been a trade unionist all my working life. I always encourage others to become members of a trade union, including family members, such as a niece. I don’t rely on others to convince people they don’t know, as it would be easier and better for those words to come from me.

The Labour government floating the idea of charging for Employment Tribunal fees shows what they really think about workers.

I’m dealing with two significant collective issues at a University where, the day after announcing proposals which will result in job losses and/or huge cuts in salary, the senior manager leading it jets off on annual leave. Some senior execs don’t give a damn about their staff.

Ever since I heard that the BBC reversed the footage from a clash on the picket line at Orgreave in June 1984 - making it look like the police retaliated to violence from striking miners - I have questioned how the BBC report on political news coverage.

Listening to a government minister on the radio is now no different to listening to one last year or the year before They ignore questions that are put to them and have no appreciation or understanding of the concerns of the public Nor any sense of commitment or pledges Unreal

This increase in time for ACAS Early Conciliation might prove to be helpful, but it is simply a change that reflects the inability of government officials to deal with the sheer volume of work they have *Early conciliation period to double from 1 December personneltoday.com/hr/early-conci…

Of all the things that HE employers have proposed in the region over the last 20 years, I think this is arguably the worst and the most destructive. UCU - Strike ballot looms at Northumbria University over attack on pay & pensions ucu.org.uk/article/14256/…

"Heres the manifesto, introducing basic rights from day one, protection from unfair dismissal. Ditched. What they're going for now is introducing that after 6mths" TUC: Hurray! In other news, 5 of the last 6 TUC general secretaries were subsequently given peerages.

There’s no recognition here that this is a significant reversal by the government. The job of trade unionists should not be to make excuses for a Labour government which can make no claim to be a friend to workers.
