My translation partner today. She picked up some Spanish in CDMX but I do like to call her “Pepita mijita” which makes her wag her tail. Mi preciosa tan bella.

Please give a warm welcome to unprepared Professor, prepared junior Professor, and massively, pathologically, unbelievably over prepared PhD

I’m thrilled to share that my English translation of Mayra Santos-Febres’ novel, Fe en disfraz, is now under contract with Vanderbilt University Press in their Global Black Writers in Translation series as Faith in Disguise. Out in 2026!

This year, I have learned the hard way that power and influence are as strong a currency as money in academia. Like an endowment, it just accrues interest over time but is rarely used, even in times of emergency, to benefit those of us below who are struggling to stay afloat.

And yet the very administrators who are tasked with trimming (annihilating) the University’s budget are 90%+ of the institution’s bloat. We don’t need literally hundreds of associate and assistant deans, vice presidents, and provosts. We need faculty. tinyurl.com/4s7vwaru

Very sad news. Donato Ndongo, Equatorial Guinea’s most significant living writer, exiled in Spain for decades, is due to be evicted from his home next Monday. For those able to assist, a fund has been set up (details within the article). eldiario.es/murcia/socieda…

What is hilarious to me is that, as a translator and someone who has taught Portuguese and Spanish language classes, he clearly put this post on Truth Social through ChatGPT. The man can barely speak English let alone find someone to actually write the post for him in Portuguese.

it’d be one thing if he was this fucking dumb in a vacuum but he literally killed people abroad, put thousands out of good jobs here, did irreparable damage to important research, stole a bunch of data, took money from consumers, and made it harder for seniors to talk to ssa!!!

Neither places of worship nor universities should have tax-free status, especially when the latter—especially private—have historically exploited the surrounding communities and/or are among the largest employers in the area if not the state. 🤷🏼‍♂️
