Data centres and semi-conductor factories will trigger a rebound in Japan's power demand, according to Meti. The FY2030 peak is still not higher than FY2021 though, so it's more about arresting the decline than a big bounce-back to days of old. #Meti #power #LNG

Last week, Japanese LNG storage for power generation made its biggest leap so far in 2024, pushing past 2022 and into average range. It's still 0.5mT below last year though, but power demand is now even weaker than it was 12 months ago, nuke is also still higher. #ICIS #meti #LNG

Preliminary analysis of Japanese power data for April shows nuclear and hydro compensating for thermal decline. This is not based on a complete set of actual data, and likely exaggerates the thermal decline, but points to coal taking a much bigger hit than LNG. #ICIS #Japan #LNG

The heat is driving Bangladesh power generation to near-record highs, with coal and gas up YoY while oil is still down. LNG send-out is at record highs, surpassing 1,000MMSCFD for the first time last month, after send-out capacity was increased earlier in the year. #ICIS

Japanese LNG storage for power is well on its rebound path. Power demand looks pretty subdued atm and nuclear is still high, but weak coal output is neutralizing some of that impact on LNG. Summer outlook indicates another scorcher, nuclear restarts uncertain. #ICIS #Meti #LNG

In May, Japanese nuclear generation reached above 8TWh for only the second time since 2011. Chugoku Electric's Shimane 2 is now expected to start in December, while Tohoku Electric's Onagawa 2 remains on track for September. #ICIS #nuclear #JAIF

It is getting hot in Japan, but LNG storage remains fairly stable as of 23 June. Yesterday was the warmest day in Tokyo so far in 2024 and more days like it is forecast for next week. Have utilities booked enough LNG to keep volumes from slipping down to 1.5mt again? #ICIS #LNG

Japanese LNG storage for power remains relatively stable and stood at 0.01mt higher on year on 30 June. Power demand remains relatively weak despite some hot days recently. This will continue to be tested as more above-average temps are forecast for H1 July. #ICIS #meti #LNG

Tokyo power demand reached its highest since early February on 4 July, with temperatures reaching 35C for the first time this year. More days like this is forecast in the next few days and above-average heat is considered likely for the summer as a whole. #ICIS #JMA #OCCTO

Off the charts! Tokyo power demand crossed the 1TWh mark yesterday for the first time in 2024, as temperatures reached 36C. Similar conditions are expected today and tomorrow. #ICIS #JMA #LNG

This month is so far shaping up to be even hotter than last year, which was the hottest July in Japan on record. LNG storage withdrawal was not huge in the first week of the month, but stocks crossed below 2m tonnes for the first time since April. #ICIS #Meti #LNG

RLNG supply to Bangladesh has been landed a double blow after both FSRU and now pipeline damage pushes sendout to multi-year low. Both issues should be resolved in a matter of days but quite a few LNG cargoes had to deferred in the meantime. #ICIS #PetroBangla

In the latest bit of Japanese nuclear news: Kansai Electric has now finally confirmed its outage schedule for 870MW Takahama 3-4 for 2025 and provided plans for replacement of steam generators in 2026. The reactors have also been cleared to operate another 20 years. #ICIS #JAIF

With Kansai Electric confirming Takahama 3-4 will not shut down in 2025 and can operate beyond 40 years, annual nuclear output should stay above 80TWh in worst case scenario. If restarts could ahead as planned, output could push above 100TWh and more than 10% of the mix. #ICIS

Japanese LNG storage has been growing in last two weeks and is now higher than 2022 and 2023. There's some correlation with the heatwave. Temps have been high but eased compared to the spike in early July. But the heat's back, and more pressure is likely in coming 2 weeks. #ICIS

Power was the biggest driver of YoY LNG demand growth in India last month. But generation data indicates gas-generation has been pared back in July and only slightly higher compared to the same month last year, following above-average monsoon rains. #ICIS #PPAC #NPP

Japanese LNG storage fell last week but was still higher compared to equivalent period last year. Power demand remains very high, and ongoing heatwave is forecast to continue through H1 Aug. Nuke availability also expected lower YoY, so more demand on LNG. #ICIS #LNG #meti

Today's post on LNG storage in Japan will likely be my last, as I transition to a new career and next stage in life. Thanks all for following, all the best!
