If you’re not competing in practice, don’t expect all of your players to turn it on in the game. Keep score in your SAGs. Start your drills or games with players racing for the puck. Create wall battles etc

Verbal feedback is important but often overused. Coaches can design practice tasks that ask questions and provide feedback through the task itself to enhance learning.

How a coach views skill affects every decision they make. From how they design tasks to what they prioritise in sessions. Here’s what a study of elite tennis coaches revealed and why it matters. 🧵

Here’s where to start: ✅ Reflect on what you believe skill is. ✅ Ask whether your practice design matches that belief. ✅ Consider: are you trying to develop repeatable movements or helping players adapt to problems?

And trainers trying to make all players look the same instead of letting players solve problems based off their strengths and weaknesses. (Individual constraints)

Agreed and many don’t mention the 999 other ones that didn’t “make it”! A good trainer is only part of the process and understands that!

Joel Cressman Really well. And the nice thing is it connects them to scanning. It allows me to work in a CLA and promote scanning. They start to understand that scanning (ie perceiving) is simply a means to collect information. And that information can then be acted upon.

The more time I spend on social media I begin to think that its the people not reading this really need to see it. Good coaching is a lottery 😔

Constraints shouldn’t trap players into one behaviour. They should *invite* behaviours without ruling others out. This is a mistake I made when first using the idea of manipulating constraints in practice
