Congratulations to the @covidcns team on the latest research out in Nature Medicine today! Showing that post-COVID cognitive deficits were equivalent to 20 years of normal ageing. 👉nature.com/articles/s4159…

Personally, I have never felt at significant risk of experiencing severe acute COVID. For years now, *by far* my own main concern (aside from also caring about other peoples' health) has been the risk of long-term cognitive and/or physical effects for me or someone in my family.

Our mechanistic review of #LongCovid - published in Cell - hopefully will be helpful coming out of the very inspiring RECOVER-Treating Long COVID meeting this week. Excited for the progress we will make together in the next year! sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

For a reminder of what it was like during Covid in smaller hospitals, here is the research we did at Nuffield Trust. Abandonment was a recurring theme. nuffieldtrust.org.uk/research/overl…

This is triggering & will bring back bad memories for many, not least my own colleagues who transferred patients from London & W. Midlands to Newcastle Hospitals in the winter of 2020/21. Thank you Dr Kevin Fong for your courage in testifying

Disabled households now need an extra £1,010 each month to have the same standard of living as others, research from Scope shows us. #PIP does not sufficiently cover this. However, it is a lifeline offering more of a chance to have a social life, get out, work and communicate.

Reminder for 'NHS-must-take-productivity-challenge-on-the-chin' ppl, what staff DID take on the chin was the pandemic. Then they had to go to picket lines to keep their pay anywhere near inflation. So a fair bit of discretionary effort has been withdrawn theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/s…

It is with a heavy heart that I have today informed my whip and decided for now to no longer take the Conservatives whip. This is a sad day for me. I am a Conservative and remain so but sadly the current Party are far removed from the Party I joined and served in Cabinet. My

While we in general practice didn’t see the horror of patients dying before our eyes, my small list lost a husband & wife in a week & many more I knew for years. We had nobody visiting us & bought PPE for our staff with our own money. The thanks we got was to reduce our funding

The reality is that because we were caught flat footed and wasted a month we had to come down much harder than if we had been on the ball at the beginning.

Wise words ⁦Professor Chris Whitty⁩ “able conduct lightning-fast scientific research & reducing health inequalities deserved most focus. If not serious about tackling health inequalities between pandemics no way you’re going to be able to when pandemics occur” theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/s…

Horrifying testimony. I was invited into an ICU for a few hours on one day to report and I still think about what I saw often. I cannot imagine what it was like for those working in that horror every single day.

There is a danger that message we could/want to take from this stark testimony is that we must never see these scenes again. I don’t think that’s possible and I don’t actually think that’s what the inquiry will find….

All our high consequence disease (and weaponised attack) planning involves massively difficult triage decisions and not enough ECMO, Ventilation etc. It involves staff there at the end. It may involve some family separation.
