Next stop Bounty Islands!

We had a treat tonight with spectacular views of the aurora australis about 100km from the Bounties!

Day 1 on the Bounty Islands was a success. We sampled penguins, albatrosses, and prions and began the drone surveys of the islands.

The erect-crested penguins on the Bounty Islands are just starting to lay. Got to watch some nest building today.

And just like that our work on the Bounties is done. Next stop 2 months on Antipodes Island!

Antipodes field season 2024 has begun! Erect-crested penguins have just laid while Eastern Rockhopper males await the return of their mates. This season we are focusing on the incubation foraging trips for both of these species.

It was a bit windy today on our hike across the island.

Today we visited the amazing Orde Lees colony. Most erect-crested penguin nests are occupied by lone females while their mates are foraging at sea to prepare for their long incubation and chick guard duty to come.

The Antipodes 2024 team after a very successful and beautiful day at Mirounga Bay. The Orde Lees colony is in the distance behind us.

After the penguins, I’m pretty sure Light-mantled Sooty Albatross are my favorite seabirds on Antipodes. I was lucky enough to observe this pair on the ground in between bouts of synchronized flights around the cliffs.

Penguins on the south coast of Antipodes have to deal with some pretty daunting landings, even on relatively calm days. But at least the colonies have a nice infinity pool to relax 🏖️
