Erin is only the 5th Category 5 hurricane on record to form this early in the hurricane season and the only Category 5 observed outside the Gulf or Caribbean this early in the year.

Sunrise on an enormous Hurricane Erin as the storm makes its closest pass on the United States — about 200 miles east of Hatteras Island, North Carolina. Erin's cloud canopy extends around 1,500 miles from the Bahamas to Nova Scotia!
