Our #instrumentofthemonth comes with its own manual: A 19th-century Ottoman astrolabe quadrant made for 41-degree, the latitude of Istanbul. The inscriptions on the sides describes several operations including how to find the times of five daily prayers. khalilicollections.org/collections/is…

Just gave a guided tour at “Hauchs Physiske Cabinet” for the H.C. Ørsted Society. The Gazometer attracted a lot of attention.

Malevolent forces at work in the UK Department for Transport. A Victorian railway arch was vandalised when filled in with concrete by a government agency. Scandalous! theguardian.com/culture/2021/j… #railway #History #Historyoftechnology

An Ancient Greek mystery: The Antikythera mechanism from 2nd century BC capable of predicting astronomical positions, eclipses+++. Amazing. Nothing remotely this advanced was seen for the next 1400 years. I saw it 20 years ago and today. Excited!! Scientific Instrument Commission #sic2022athens

Unthinkable, unbelievable! Tonight, 450 years ago, Tycho Brahe looked at the sky and saw a bright new star. The heavens were eternal and unchangeable. A supernova changed this on November 11th 1572. Tycho published his findings in May 1573 in De nova stella #histAstro #HistSci
